If you want a high-end, Food Processor Attachment-compatible Vitamix, the Ascent X4 is a blender you’ll love having as part of your home. In addition to making the best smoothies you’ve ever had, your culinary game will change.
The user experience on the X4 is great even if it takes a minute to get used to. The five recipe programs are inside a menu and they’re selected by turning the dial in a way that may feel counter-intuitive at first — point the dial to the program you want to use. Find the smoothie program, press start, and walk away.
Add 15-second button to add time to a program adds some on-the-fly flexibility. So if you’re using the frozen dessert recipe program to make ice cream, for example, and it needs a bit more time, you can just tape the Add-15 seconds button instead of starting from the beginning.
There are a couple of notifications that are especially helpful for beginners. First is the tamper indicator which reminds you to use the tamper when it’s running a program and senses that it needs you to push the ingredients down. There’s also a warning light if the motor is overheating, a result of the most commonly made beginner mistakes of avoiding variable speed 10 because you’re afraid it will hurt the machine when in fact it runs more efficiently and effectively on High.
Of course, you can take full control of the X4 by using the 1-10 variable speeds. Precise textures on the lower speeds, silky smooth textures at ten.
All Vitamix blenders are loud. But the X4, as part of the Ascent X Series, is less loud than the entry-level models. The Self-Cleaning program is especially less noisy than predecessors.
The X4 comes with what we call the Goldilocks container, the 48-ounce. It’s an ideal size for experimenting with everything from smoothies to hot soups to pesto without committing to large batches.
It’s compatible with the Food Processor Attachments and any any future attachments that require SELF-DETECT (like if Vitamix ever reintroduces the 8-ounce Personal Blending Attachment or does a juicing attachment). So while we recommend only getting what you need right now, it’s a system on which you can build when you’re ready.
The only minor considerations? There’s a learning curve to accessing the recipe programs. You have to press the menu button and then use the dial to scroll through by pointing it at the program you want to select (instead of in the direction you want the programs to scroll). The programs are labeled by symbols-only and the tamper holder could be more sturdy. But these are small tradeoffs for what is otherwise an exceptionally well-rounded machine that could easily become your kitchen’s most reliable companion for the next decade.
Choosing a color is the fun part. Brushed Stainless is a true metal finish and fits the best in most kitchens. Graphite, also a true metal finish, is like matte black and is somewhat fingerprint-resistant.

Like all full-size Vitamix models, the X4 can make smoothies, smoothie bowls, hot soups, frozen desserts like ice cream, nut butters, shakes, dips like queso, spreads like pesto, sauces, dressings, frappés, frozen cocktails, spice grinds, and non-dairy milks.
